Linux String Substitute Error

I was told to replace Random with Sonar but i was marked down. Please let me understand why because after this command, i checked the files to ensure the changes have taken place and exited by saving.

sudo sed -i -r ‘s/Random/Sonar/g’ /root/nautilus.xml

random

I am not sure what was the need for -r option. sed command with -i option was good enough to accomplish the requested task.
